Government Seats Are Growing, But Slower Than Private

Out of the 9,911 new MBBS seats added across the country this year, merely 2,111 seats (21.3%) belong to government medical colleges, while a whopping 7,800 seats (78.7%) belong to private medical colleges. This trend of private medical colleges opening up at a faster rate than government medical colleges has been observed over several admission cycles now, as the latter requires state funding and approvals for new seats, while the former can be set up relatively easily. In short, for the foreseeable future, a government medical college seat is likely to remain comparatively difficult to secure than a private medical college seat, despite NMC’s best efforts to boost government medical education

AIQ vs State Quota: How Government Seats Are Actually Allotted

  • All India Quota (AIQ) 15% in each Government Medical College is clubbed together by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and these seats are open to all domicile candidates.
  • State Quota Rest 85% in each Government Medical College are clubbed together by State counselling authorities and these seats are allotted to domicile candidates, some states allow some seats for non-domicle candidates as well.
  • AIQ reservation of seats is applicable as follows 10% EWS, 27% OBC (without creamy layer), 15% SC, 7.5% ST, 5% PwD (horizontal reservation) as per central government norms.
  • State Quota reservation varies from state to state, it may be different than the AIQ reservation so better to check out your state brochure for state-specific reservations instead of assuming it to be same as AIQ reservation.
  • Deemed Universities and Central Universities 100% of MBBS seats in Deemed universities are under the purview of AIQ counselling, they have nothing to do with state quota government seats mentioned above.

How to Improve Your Chances of a Government Seat

  • Register for both AIQ and your state counselling separately as they have independent seat allocation and mostly different cut-offs (in some states different) so keep them separate
  • Know your approximate cutoffs in your category for both AIQ and respective states as percentages vary in different states
  • Don't forget to apply at newer government/RajMES district colleges which close at much lower ranks than the city colleges (even though they are government ones but fee is much lower)
  • Make long choice lists for different rounds (1st, 2nd, mop up, stray vacancy) and don't choice lock your top colleges, leave some room for lower round college admission.
  • Cross verify your desired college and seat numbers from the NMC seat matrix and respective state counselling brochure especially for those colleges which had new seats added this year.
To conclude, 63,296 government medical college MBBS seats is the highest number of government medical college seats ever recorded in a single admission cycle, but it is important to remember that the number of private medical college seats is rising at a higher rate than government medical college seats, and government medical college seats remain comparatively difficult to secure at most ranks. Knowing the difference between All India Quota seats and state-wise seats, and keeping track of new medical colleges added in each state, is what ultimately determines your likelihood of getting admission, rather than just having a vague idea about how many government medical college seats are there in total. Bookmark this post, use a NEET UG College predictor to determine what government medical colleges you can expect to get into based on your rank, and apply to both All India Quota counselling and State-wise counselling for whichever government medical college you are interested in.
Do keep in mind that this list of government medical college seats is subject to changes with the announcement of new medical colleges or changes in existing seats, so keep checking this post for any updates.
