The NEET UG 2026 stray round result is out, but for many MBBS aspirants the story is not over yet. About 960 MBBS seats are reported to be still vacant after the stray round allotment, and that has set off one big question: will MCC open the doors once more? If you missed a seat in every round so far, the next few days could matter a lot.
MCC has opened a special stray vacancy round in earlier years to fill seats that were left over, including in 2021, 2023 and 2025. Nothing has been announced for 2026 yet. Here is what the numbers say, which dates you must not miss, and how to stay ready if another chance comes.
Details here are current as of 20 October 2026. MCC can release a notice at any time, so keep checking the official MCC website. Quick links to predictors, college lists and official portals are given at the end of this page.

Will MCC Conduct a Special Stray Round in NEET UG 2026?

The short answer is that it is possible but not announced. MCC's UG counselling bulletin lists four rounds: Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 and the stray vacancy round. A special stray vacancy round has been added through a separate notice in some years, when a meaningful number of seats were left over.

Past special stray rounds

Table
YearWhat MCC did
NEET UG 2021MCC held an online special stray vacancy round to fill about 323 MBBS seats. There was no fresh NEET registration, but fresh choice filling was required. Candidates holding no seat in AIQ or state quota were eligible, and the security deposit was forfeited if an allotted seat was not joined.
NEET UG 2023MCC ran a special stray vacancy round and updated its seat matrix before choice filling, adding 3 MBBS seats and removing 3 MBBS and 1 BDS seats.
NEET UG 2025MCC's schedule page listed special stray round schedules for AIQ and states. The final stray matrix that year had 1,232 MBBS AIQ seats vacant.
NEET UG 2026No special stray round announced as of 20 October 2026.

What would decide a special stray round

  • The number of MBBS seats still empty once the reporting window closes on 26 October
  • Whether those seats belong to the MCC pool of AIQ, central, deemed, ESIC and AIIMS seats
  • A formal MCC notice with dates, eligibility and a fresh seat matrix
Our reading is that a vacancy count near 960 would make a special stray round plausible, since MCC held one in 2021 for about 323 seats. This is analysis based on past practice. It is not an MCC announcement, so do not plan around it.

What Happens to Vacant MBBS Seats After the MCC Stray Round?

  • Seats not filled by 26 October stay vacant in the MCC pool until MCC decides on the next step.
  • MCC may re-list them in a special stray round, but only through an official notice.
  • State quota seats are separate. States fill the 85% state quota through their own stray rounds, while MCC covers the 15% AIQ and central, deemed, ESIC and AIIMS seats.
  • Colleges cannot admit students outside the notified counselling process.
  • Seats left empty after the final state round may lapse for the academic year. West Bengal, for example, has said seats vacant after its 23 October result will lapse.

What Students Should Do Now

  1. Log in at mcc.nic.in and check your stray round result. Raise any discrepancy within the window MCC has given.
  2. If you have been allotted a seat, report to the college by 26 October with originals and photocopies of all documents.
  3. If you did not get a seat, stay registered and keep checking the MCC UG counselling notices for a special stray round.
  4. Keep your NEET UG scorecard, admit card, Class 10 and 12 certificates, ID proof and category certificate ready.
  5. Check your own state's stray round as well, since state quota seats are handled separately.
  6. Ignore agents or social media posts that promise seats. Rely only on MCC and state authority notices.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the 960 figure as an official MCC number
  • Assuming a special stray round is confirmed
  • Missing the 26 October reporting deadline after allotment
  • Skipping the state stray round while waiting for MCC
  • Paying anyone outside the official MCC or college payment process
This is a developing story. The vacancy figure, and any decision on a special stray round, will only be clear once MCC publishes its own notice, so verify every update on the official portal.
