BRD Medical College was conceptualised in November 1969 and the first batch of 50 MBBS students was admitted in 1972. It is one of the oldest government medical colleges in eastern Uttar Pradesh, named after freedom fighter and social reformer Baba Raghav Das.

Nehru Hospital is the teaching hospital — a major tertiary care centre with 950+ beds. It is the only tertiary care centre in a 300 km² region around Gorakhpur. It has CT scan, Doppler ultrasound, ICU, epidemic ward, blood bank, drug distribution centre, ART/VCTC centre, DOTS/microscopy centre, and a 450-seat lecture theatre.

BRD has 4 hostel buildings: UG Boys (453 rooms), Girls Hostel (151 rooms), PG Hostels (98 rooms in 2 separate hostels), and Nursing Students Hostel (100 rooms). Each has a student-managed mess with kitchen and dining areas. PG residents typically get single rooms.
