Medical missionary work at Ludhiana began in 1881. In 1894, Dame Edith Mary Brown established the North Indian School of Medicine for Christian Women — the first medical school for women in Asia. It was renamed Women's Christian Medical College in 1913, then Christian Medical College in 1952 to admit both genders. The first co-educational MBBS batch was admitted in 1953.
