DMCH's origins date to 1934, when Dr. Banarsi Dass Soni started the Arya Medical School in Civil Lines, Ludhiana. In 1964, it became a full-fledged MBBS college under the name Dayanand Medical College & Hospital with industrialist H.R. Dhanda as Founder President. DMCH was the first hospital in Punjab to set up a dialysis unit in nephrology service in 1980, and since April 2001, the Hero DMC Heart Institute provides advanced cardiac care.

The total academic fee for MBBS at DMCH is β‚Ή23.78 lakhs for the complete course (AY 2025-26). First-year fee is β‚Ή4.26 lakhs. Fees are subject to revision by the State Level Fee Determination Committee, Punjab. Hostel fees are additional.

DMCH Ludhiana is ranked 36th (score 55.65) in the Medical category by NIRF 2025, an improvement from 40th in 2024. It was also ranked 28th by India Today 2025 and 14th by The Week 2025 β€” consistently among the top private medical colleges in North India.

DMCH's teaching hospital has 1,326 beds (including 800 teaching beds), seeing over 5 lakh outpatients and 30,000 inpatients annually. The hospital is NABH-accredited and includes the Hero DMC Heart Institute (advanced cardiac care since 2001) and the dialysis unit established in 1980 β€” first in Punjab.
