GMERS Porbandar is the only medical college in the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi — one of the most historically and globally significant cities in India. The affiliated university — Bhakta Kavi Narsinh Mehta University (BKNMU) — is named after the poet-saint Narsinh Mehta who composed 'Vaishnav Jan To,' Mahatma Gandhi's personal bhajan anthem, creating an extraordinary cultural connection. Porbandar Airport is approximately 3 km from the city centre — the closest airport access of any GMERS campus. As the only GMERS college on the Arabian Sea coast, GMERS Porbandar offers clinical exposure to health conditions unique to fishing communities and coastal populations: occupational injuries among fishermen, maritime-related trauma, saltwater exposure conditions, fish-related allergies, coastal infectious diseases, and fishermen's occupational health issues. Porbandar's fishing industry is one of the largest in Gujarat, and the Civil Hospital's Emergency and Surgery departments regularly manage fishing-related trauma and occupational health cases — providing exposure unavailable at any inland GMERS campus.

GMERS Medical College and Civil Hospital, Porbandar was established in 2022. The Letter of Permission (LOP) from the National Medical Commission (NMC) was issued on 18/08/2022.
