GMC Amritsar's origins date to 1864, when it was founded as the Temple Medical School in British India (originally in Lahore as Glancy Medical College). It relocated to Amritsar and was officially renamed Government Medical College, Amritsar in 1928. At the time of Partition in 1947, it was the only medical college in Northern India. With 160+ years of history, it is one of India's oldest and most prestigious medical institutions.

GMC Amritsar offers 250 MBBS seats annually (one of the highest among Punjab government colleges) and 142 PG MD/MS seats across 26 specializations. Super-specialty DM/M.Ch. courses in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Urology are also offered.

As a state government medical college, GMC Amritsar offers highly affordable MBBS education. Total MBBS course fees are approximately ₹9.98 lakhs for the complete program. Annual tuition fee is approximately ₹1.16–₹1.50 lakhs per year. Fees are among the lowest for any recognized quality medical college in Punjab.

For 2025 NEET UG, AIQ General category closing rank was 5,197. Punjab State Quota General category closing rank was approximately 20,404. NEET score range: General 575–595; OBC 560–580. GMC Amritsar is among the most competitive government medical colleges in Punjab for AIQ seats, rivalling AIIMS Bathinda in state preference.
