GMC Kottayam was established in 1960 and formally inaugurated on December 3, 1962, by then Chief Minister R. Sankar. It is the third oldest government medical college in Kerala. It shifted to the present Gandhinagar campus in April 1970.
GMC Kottayam admits 175 MBBS students per year. Of these, 149 seats (85%) are under Kerala State Quota (via CEE Kerala KEAM counselling) and 26 seats (15%) are under All India Quota (via MCC).
MBBS tuition fee under government quota is Rs. 23,150 per year plus a one-time caution deposit of Rs. 2,210 and annual miscellaneous charges of approximately Rs. 1,660. Hostel fees are extra. Total for 4.5 academic years is approximately Rs. 1.2–1.5 lakh inclusive of all charges (excluding mess).
GMC Kottayam offers 108 PG seats across 22 MD/MS disciplines and 18 super-specialty (DM/MCh) seats across 9 disciplines. MD courses include General Medicine, Paediatrics, Radio-Diagnosis, Anaesthesiology, Pathology, and more. MS courses include General Surgery, OBG, Orthopaedics, ENT, and Ophthalmology.
