GMC Kozhikode (Calicut Medical College) was established on August 5, 1957. The foundation stone was laid on May 29, 1957, by Governor Dr. B. Ramakrishna Rao, and the college was inaugurated by Health Minister Dr. A. R. Menon. It is the second oldest medical college in Kerala.

GMC Kozhikode admits 250 MBBS students per year — one of the highest intakes among government medical colleges in India. 212 seats (85%) are filled via Kerala State Quota (KEAM counselling) and 38 seats (15%) via All India Quota (MCC counselling).

GMC Kozhikode's teaching hospital complex has a total bed strength of 3025, making it the largest hospital in India by bed capacity. The campus houses multiple specialized institutions: the Institute of Maternal and Child Health (IMCH, 1100 beds), Regional Cancer Centre, Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS), Institute of Palliative Medicine, and the Institute of Sports Medicine.

This makes GMC Kozhikode one of the most competitive government medical colleges in India, typically requiring NEET scores above 660 for general category students.
