GMC Palakkad (IIMS) is the only government medical college in Kerala established and managed under the Scheduled Caste Development Department, funded through SCP funds. It was conceived as a fully residential, eco-friendly, green campus powered by renewable energy (solar and wind). Palakkad district — having the highest SC/Scheduled Communities population in Kerala — previously had no government medical college, making this institution pivotal for inclusive healthcare education.

GMC Palakkad has 100 MBBS seats per year (85 state quota + 15 AIQ) and 12 PG (MD/MS) seats. There is no management or NRI quota.

The MBBS tuition fee is approximately ₹23,150 per year as per Kerala government norms — one of the lowest in India. SC/ST students receive a full tuition fee waiver. Hostel and mess charges are additional.
