IIT (BHU) Varanasi has one of the richest histories of any engineering institution in India. It was founded in 1919 as the Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, the visionary founder of Banaras Hindu University. Two more institutions — the College of Mining & Metallurgy (1923) and the College of Technology (1932) — were added and then all three merged in 1968 to form the Institute of Technology, BHU (IT-BHU). IT-BHU was converted to Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi by an Act of Parliament on June 29, 2012. The institute celebrated its centenary in 2019.

The JEE Advanced 2025 closing rank for B.Tech CSE at IIT (BHU) in the General (CRL) category was 1,489 (Round 6). In 2024, the closing rank was 1,071 (Round 5). Cutoffs vary each year. Other competitive branches include Mathematics & Computing (closing rank 1,924 in 2025) and Electronics Engineering (2,635 in 2025). Branches like Pharmaceutical Engineering and Mining Engineering have higher closing ranks, making them accessible to a wider range of candidates.

The PARAM SHIVAY Supercomputing Centre was inaugurated by the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 19, 2019, during the centenary celebrations of the institute. It was the first supercomputer installed under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) under the 'Make in India' program. The hardware was manufactured by Atos (France) at a plant in Chennai. The system is a sophisticated mix of CPUs and GPUs and significantly enhances the institute's advanced research computing capabilities.

Yes. IIT (BHU) Varanasi is the only IIT in India that offers B.Tech in Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology. It also offers B.Tech in Ceramic Engineering and Mining Engineering — rare specializations with deep industrial relevance. The Integrated Dual Degree (IDD) program offering both B.Tech and M.Tech in 5 years is also a popular option. B.Arch is offered by the Department of Architecture, Planning and Design.
