KIMS Bangalore was established in 1980 by the Vokkaligara Sangha — the apex body of the Vokkaliga community in Karnataka — named after Kempegowda I, the 16th-century founder of Bengaluru. Classes commenced on 16 March 1981, observed annually as 'KIMS Day'. The foundation stone was laid by then CM Shri R. Gundu Rao on 30 November 1980.

Annual cultural fest Atharva hosts music, dance, and other events. Uttunga is the prestigious intercollegiate medical quiz competition hosted by KIMS. The college celebrates 16 March as KIMS Day annually.
