Frequently Asked Questions

MRMC was established in 1963 when the Karnataka Government decided to set up its state medical college in Bellary instead of Gulbarga β€” depriving the underserved HK region of a medical institution. The Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society, under Sri Mahadevappa Rampure, stepped in to establish a private medical college. In 1972, MRMC received recognition from MCI β€” becoming only the SECOND PRIVATE MEDICAL COLLEGE IN INDIA to receive MCI recognition after KMC Manipal. It also received recognition from the British Medical Council (now GMC, UK). This 60+ year legacy makes it one of India's most historically important private medical colleges.

MRMC is technically a private medical college run by the Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society (HKES) β€” a non-profit educational society. However, it is sometimes described as 'semi-government' because HKES was established to serve the HK region's public interest, most admissions go through KEA government-administered counselling, and fees are regulated by the Karnataka FDC. It is NOT a Government of Karnataka college.

200 NMC-approved MBBS seats (recently increased from 150). Distributed across Government, Management, and NRI quotas via KEA. 70% of state quota seats are reserved for HK-region candidates under Article 371(J).

1. Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital β€” the main teaching hospital, opened January 1967, 1,000+ beds, located adjacent to the college campus. 2. Sangameshwar Teaching Hospital β€” additional hospital, 765+ beds combined system. Both hospitals together provide 24Γ—7 emergency care, trauma ICU, OT complex, Blood Bank, and comprehensive clinical training. From 2005, all clinical teaching was moved from the Government District Hospital to these dedicated MRMC teaching hospitals. Additional affiliated training: PHC I-Narona (34 km), PHC II-Gobbur (22 km), PHC III-Hobbal (35 km), and UHTC-Rajapur (1 km from college).
