Chikkaballapura Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) was renamed to Nandi Medical College and Research Institute (NMC&RI) with effect from 29 July 2025 by the Government of Karnataka. The name 'Nandi' honours the iconic Nandi Hills (Nandidurga) — the defining geographical, cultural, and historical landmark of Chikkaballapura district. Nandi Hills, rising to 1,478 metres, is one of Karnataka's most celebrated peaks, a major historical site (Tipu Sultan's summer retreat), and a premier tourist and ecological destination. The new name captures the district's identity and aspires to build a research-oriented medical institution befitting the Nandi heritage.

NMC&RI (formerly CIMS) is a fully autonomous government medical college established by the Government of Karnataka. There is NO Management or NRI quota — all MBBS seats are through KEA (State Quota, 85%) and MCC (AIQ, 15%) on pure NEET merit.

The college was established in 2021 with the first MBBS batch of 100 students. MBBS intake was subsequently expanded to 150 seats. The college was renamed to NMC&RI effective 29 July 2025.

150 NMC-approved MBBS seats (expanded from original 100). No NRI or Management quota. PG: MD Anaesthesiology is NMC-approved; additional PG specialties are being added as the college matures. BSc Allied Health Sciences (Nursing, Imaging Technology, Anaesthesia Technology, BMLT) also offered.
