'Navodaya' means 'New Dawn' in Sanskrit/Kannada. NMC was founded in 2001 by Shri S.R. Reddy, who established the Navodaya Education Trust in 1992 with a vision of transforming education in North Karnataka. Shri Reddy built the Navodaya Hospital & Diagnostic Centre in 1996, which became the foundation for the full-fledged medical college established in 2001. Today the Navodaya Education Trust manages 15+ institutions across Medical, Dental, Engineering, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and schools.

NMC is a private medical college affiliated to RGUHS, managed by Navodaya Education Trust. It is also a Telugu Linguistic Minority institution. All MBBS seats (Government, Management, NRI quota) are allotted through KEA Karnataka. It is NOT a government college.

NMC Raichur is doubly significant for minority and regional candidates. As a Telugu Linguistic Minority institution (Raichur borders AP and Telangana), a portion of management seats is reserved for Telugu-speaking candidates. As an HK 371(J) region college (Raichur is one of the 6 HK districts), 70% of state quota MBBS seats are reserved for candidates from the HK districts — Raichur, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Yadgir, Koppal, Ballari. HK-region candidates thus have a much higher chance of securing a seat at NMC Raichur at lower NEET ranks than non-HK Karnataka candidates.
