RIMS traces its history to October 22, 1968, when a 300-bed General Hospital was inaugurated by the then Union Home Minister. The medical college was established on September 14, 1972, as Regional Medical College — a date now celebrated as RIMS Foundation Day. After several name and administrative changes, it was finally renamed Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and transferred to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India on April 1, 2007.
RIMS is a centrally-run government institution and offers extremely affordable MBBS education. Annual tuition fee is approximately ₹3,500 per year, with total MBBS course fees (4.5 years) approximately ₹15,000–₹17,700. This makes RIMS one of the most cost-effective premier medical colleges in India. Hostel and examination fees are additional but also subsidized.
