SNMC was established in 2002 by Shri Basaveshwar Vidya Vardhak Sangha (BVV Sangha) — founded in 1906 by His Holiness Shri Gurubasava Mahaswamiji of Bilur. The medical college was named after Shri S. Nijalingappa — former Chief Minister of Karnataka — who granted 250 acres of land on lease for 30 years to establish the institution; this was later regularized by Late Shri J.H. Patel when he was Chief Minister. The hospital was named Hanagal Shree Kumareshwar (HSK) Hospital after Saint Shree Kumara Swamiji of Hanagal — a pioneer in herbal medicine who promoted the sangha/trust model for education in underprivileged areas.
