SLNMCH holds two historic distinctions: (1) It is the 4th Government Medical College in Odisha. (2) It is the first and only medical college in the KBK (Koraput–Balangir–Kalahandi) region — one of the most historically underdeveloped zones in India. Named after Saheed Laxman Nayak, a tribal freedom fighter martyred in 1943, the institution embodies the spirit of service to the tribal communities of southern Odisha.

The SLNMCH campus is one of the largest among Odisha government medical colleges at 52 acres. The teaching hospital has 650 beds (newly inaugurated in 2024-25) with a 20-bed ICU and 24x7 emergency care. The hospital has roots going back to 1908 (as a dispensary) and 1937 (as a Local Fund Hospital with 47 beds) — one of the oldest healthcare facilities in southern Odisha.
