The full name is Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Medical Sciences & Hospital (SDMCMSH). It was established in 2003 as a brainchild of Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade — Dharmadhikari of Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala — under the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational (SDME) Trust, which was established in 1966 by the 20th Dharmadhikari, Late D. Rathnavarma Heggade. The Dharmasthala tradition — centered around the sacred Manjunatha temple in Dharmasthala, near Mangaluru, with 800+ years of charitable service — imbues the college with a distinctive ethos of dharma (righteousness) and seva (service).
