Frequently Asked Questions
SIMS Shimoga is a fully autonomous government medical college established by the Government of Karnataka. There is NO Management or NRI quota — all 150 MBBS seats are filled through KEA (State Quota, 85%) and MCC (AIQ, 15%) based purely on NEET merit.
The Government McGann Hospital — within whose premises SIMS operates — was constructed in 1880 by a British Administrator (presumably named McGann) on a 70-acre campus. McGann worked in the Shimoga hospital maintained by the Mysore Government and exclusively worked to control Malaria, which was rampant in the Malnad region during the 19th century. The new hospital block with 367 beds was built in 1991-92. The hospital has served as the primary healthcare centre for Shivamogga district for over 140 years, making it one of Karnataka's oldest operational hospital campuses.
A Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) has been established by the Government of India at SIMS Shimoga. VRDLs are part of the national ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) network for viral disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, and advanced diagnostics. This is a rare and prestigious distinction for SIMS — one of the few Karnataka medical colleges with a GoI/ICMR-networked research lab — providing students and faculty with specialized virology research opportunities beyond the standard government college curriculum.
SIMS was established in 2007. Establishment year varies by source: some cite 2005 (possibly first recognition / letter of intent year); 2007 is the most consistently cited year for actual establishment and first batch. Both 2005 and 2007 appear in authoritative sources.
