It was originally founded as ESIC (Employee's State Insurance Corporation) Medical College in 2009 by then Union Minister of Labour & Employment Shri Oskar Fernandes. It was subsequently renamed Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College, Mandi in 2017 after being transferred to the Government of HP.

SLBSGMC Mandi has the largest PG programme among newer HP govt. colleges – 152 seats across 26 disciplines. Originally an ESIC Medical College (2009), it has more developed infrastructure than 2016–2018 founded HP colleges. 32-acre campus, 500+ bed hospital, 800-seat auditorium.
