SVMCH&RC was established in 2007 by the Sri Ramachandra Educational Trust (SRET), Chennai, under Chairman Shri B. Ramachandran. It is affiliated to Pondicherry University, recognized by NMC and approved by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the Government of Puducherry. It holds a NAAC 'A+' Grade accreditation.

SVMCH&RC offers 150 MBBS seats annually and 75 PG MD/MS seats across 19 departments. MBBS admissions are through CENTAC Puducherry counselling. PG admissions are 50% All India Quota (MCC) and 50% State Quota (CENTAC).

The annual MBBS tuition fee at SVMCH&RC is approximately ₹12,00,000–₹14,00,000 per year for the State/Competent Authority Quota, as per the State Level Fee Determination Committee, Puducherry. Total (4.5 years): approximately ₹54–₹63 lakhs. Fees are interim and subject to revision. Hostel fees are additional.

SVMCH&RC is located in Ariyur on the Puducherry–Villupuram National Highway, approximately 16 km from Pondicherry city centre, 17.5 km from Lawspet Airport (approximately 40 minutes drive), and 16 km from the railway station. The NH location provides excellent road connectivity.
