St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences (SJNAHS) comprises: (1) St. John's Medical College, (2) St. John's Medical College Hospital (est. 1975), (3) St. John's Research Institute (est. 2004), (4) St. John's College of Nursing (est. 1980), and (5) St. John's Institute of Health Management and Para Medical Studies.
SJMC is a private, unaided Christian minority institution, established and managed by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) Society for Medical Education. It is not a government college, but is affiliated to RGUHS and recognized by NMC.
After completing MBBS, graduates must serve for 2 years in SJMCH-affiliated hospitals in medically underserved areas. Candidates who skip this bond must execute a 1-year service bond at SJMCH-affiliated hospitals after completing PG, or pay a penalty of βΉ5,00,000.
SJMC was founded on the initiative of the Catholic Bishops of India; its cornerstone was blessed by Pope Paul VI during the International Eucharistic Congress in 1964 and laid by Shri V.V. Giri (later President of India) in 1965. It was dedicated by President Dr. Zakir Hussain in 1968. SJMC has produced more Rhodes Scholars (7) than any other medical college in India.
