Can you really get an MBBS seat at a rank beyond 10 lakh? This year's stray round says yes, but only for one kind of seat. A deemed university MBBS seat was allotted at AIR 11,90,352 with a score of just 177. At the other end, the last government seat in the All India Quota closed at AIR 28,515.
That gap is the whole story of the NEET UG 2026 stray vacancy closing rank. MCC listed 4,068 seats, allotted 3,108, and 960 seats across MBBS, BDS and BSc Nursing stayed unallotted. Government seats stopped at rank 28,515 for the Open category. Deemed university seats went far beyond that, which is why the same stray round can show a rank of 28 thousand and a rank of 11 lakh in the same result.

Government MBBS cutoffs moved by only about 2 marks in the stray round. AIIMS fell much more because only 39 AIIMS seats were left, and the seat went to a candidate who had listed AIIMS Madurai as a last preference. Students also tend to choose fewer upgrade options in the final round.

MCC's final data after the 26 October reporting deadline will show how many MBBS seats actually stay empty, since some allotted candidates may not join. For context, the NMC seat matrix dated 21 September 2026 lists 1,40,664 MBBS seats in 839 colleges, with 64,121 in government and 76,543 in private colleges.
Will MCC Conduct a Special Stray Round in NEET UG 2026?
No special stray vacancy round has been announced for 2026. MCC's bulletin lists four rounds, and the stray round is the fourth. MCC has held special stray rounds in earlier years, including 2021 for about 323 MBBS seats, so one is possible if seats remain empty after 26 October.
If a special round happens, closing ranks could go lower still, especially at deemed and private seats. Treat it as a possibility, not a plan, until MCC posts a notice.

State quota seats are separate from MCC seats. Each state has its own eligibility rules, so check them before applying in a state stray round.
What Students With a Low Rank Should Do Now
- Check your MCC result on mcc.nic.in and report to the allotted college by 26 October with originals and photocopies.
- If you did not get a seat, check each state's stray round, since many are still open.
- Compare fee, bond and hostel costs at self-financed seats before accepting them.
- Confirm that the college is NMC recognised and the seat appears in MCC's official list.
- Keep your NEET scorecard, admit card, Class 10 and 12 certificates, ID proof and category certificate ready.
- Do not pay agents who promise a seat. Use only MCC, state authority and college notices.
