About Government Medical College, Nagpur
Government Medical College, Nagpur (GMC Nagpur) is one of the oldest and most prestigious government medical colleges in Central India, established in 1947. It is the premier medical institution of Nagpur — Maharashtra's second capital ('Winter Capital') and India's geographical centre. The college traces its roots to the 'City Hospital' of Nagpur established in 1862 (now Mayo Hospital), where a medical school was started in 1914 under the name 'Robertson School.' GMC Nagpur was established as a full-fledged medical college in 1947, initially affiliated to Nagpur University (1947–1997), and now to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik. Located at Ajni, near Hanuman Nagar, Nagpur — 940 km south of Mumbai — the college occupies a massive campus of 196 acres, making it one of the largest campuses among government medical colleges in Asia. The G+2 storey main building spans 84,000 sq. ft. The campus houses 23 academic departments, state-of-the-art laboratories, a central library with nearly 5,000 books and 30 national/international journals, two auditoriums, a gym, sports facilities, and separate hostels for boys and girls. GMC Nagpur holds a unique distinction: it was the first college in India to start Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy schools. The college offers MBBS (250 seats), MD/MS (197 PG seats across 21 disciplines), DM/M.Ch Super Specialty (10 seats across 4 disciplines), B.Sc. Nursing, BPMT, BPT/BOT, and DMLT programmes. The attached teaching hospital — Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) / Mayo Hospital — is one of Central India's largest tertiary care hospitals with 1,886 beds (1,400 total including 723 teaching + 99 service + 822 patient care beds), 10 major OTs, 2 minor OTs, 1,000+ daily OPD patients, Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) at Saoner (45.6 km) and Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) at Ajni (2 km). During NEET 2021–2024 combined counselling, 40 candidates were allotted seats.
