Government Medical College, Pariyaram, Kannur — popularly known as Pariyaram Medical College — is one of the most prestigious government medical institutions in North Kerala. Originally established in 1993 under the cooperative sector as the Academy of Medical Sciences (ACME), it was the first medical college in India to be set up under the cooperative model and was subsequently taken over by the Government of Kerala in 1995. Affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), Thrissur, and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the college sits on a sprawling 119-acre campus in Pariyaram, Kannur district. Its attached 1,200-bedded super-specialty teaching hospital serves as a major referral centre for North Kerala, offering more than 20 specialties and 8 super-specialty departments with 24x7 emergency and trauma care. The institution admits 100 MBBS students annually, offers 38 PG seats across 22 disciplines, and super-specialty DM programmes in Cardiology. The Pariyaram Medical College Hospital is a large multi-specialty referral centre with over 1,200 beds, serving as the primary clinical training ground. It houses 20+ specialties, 8 super-specialty departments, 18 advanced operation theatres, 24x7 emergency and trauma care, ICU, burn unit, and dialysis centre.

Central Library and E-Library

One of the best medical college libraries in Kerala, housing over 17,499 medical books, 100+ national and international journals (with 88 foreign and 31 Indian back volumes), 500+ medical CDs, and 24x7 e-library access. Reading rooms accommodate 96 (indoor) and 40 (outdoor) students simultaneously.

GMC Kannur is located in Pariyaram, approximately 20 km from Kannur city and 46 km from Kannur International Airport. It is well connected by road and the nearest railway station is approximately 6.5 km away. Local buses and autos connect Pariyaram to Kannur and Taliparamba.

Yes, MBBS graduates from GMC Kannur (a government medical college) are required to complete compulsory rural/government health service for a stipulated period after internship. Failure to complete bond service attracts a financial penalty which must be paid before medical council registration or PG admission.

GMC Kannur offers 100 MBBS seats per year. Of these, 15 seats are under the All India Quota (AIQ) managed by MCC/DGHS, and 85 seats are filled through Kerala State Quota counselling by CEE Kerala.
