About Government T.D. Medical College, Vandanam, Alappuzha

Government T.D. Medical College (TDMC), Vandanam, Alappuzha, is one of Kerala's oldest and most storied public medical institutions, with a legacy dating to 1963. Originally established as a private cooperative-sector institution — Tirumala Devaswom Medical College — it holds the distinction of being the first medical college to be established in the cooperative sector of India. The first batch of 50 MBBS students commenced classes in August 1963. The Government of Kerala subsequently took over the institution and issued GO (MS).263/73/HD on 23 October 1973 upgrading the Alappuzha District Headquarters Hospital as the teaching hospital. Affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), TDMC's expansive 145-acre campus at Vandanam houses the 175-seat MBBS programme, 80 MD/MS postgraduate seats, super-specialty DM/MCh courses, B.Sc Nursing, GNM, B.Pharm, D.Pharm, and multiple paramedical diploma programmes. The attached Government T.D. Medical College Hospital is a major public health referral centre serving central and southern Kerala. TDMC offers 175 MBBS seats per year. Of these, 15% (approximately 26 seats) are under the All India Quota (AIQ) managed by MCC/DGHS, and 85% (approximately 149 seats) are under Kerala State Quota via CEE Kerala. As a government college, there are no management or NRI quota seats.

Yes. MBBS graduates from TDMC (a government medical college) must serve in rural/government health services for a stipulated period after internship. MD/MS graduates also have a 1-year compulsory service bond. Failure to complete bond service attracts a financial penalty as specified in the bond agreement signed at the time of admission.
