About Government Ayurvedic College & Hospital, Patna

Government Ayurvedic College & Hospital (GACH), Patna, is one of the oldest and most distinguished government Ayurvedic institutions in India, established in 1926. Situated in the heart of Patna on Budh Marg, Kadam Kuan, it is affiliated with Aryabhatta Knowledge University, Patna, and is recognized and approved by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), and the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. With a history spanning nearly a century, GACH Patna has played a pivotal role in nurturing generations of Ayurvedic practitioners, researchers, and scholars who have served across Bihar, India, and the world. The institution was founded with a clear vision: to bring together, in one place, educational facilities of the highest order for the training of self-sufficient personnel in all the important branches of Ayurvedic health activity. Today, GACH Patna stands as the premier government Ayurveda college in Bihar, offering undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and certificate programmes that serve hundreds of students from across the country every year. GACH Patna offers the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) programme with an intake of 125 seats, making it one of the largest government Ayurveda colleges in Bihar by UG intake. The 5.5-year BAMS programme comprises 4.5 years of academic study followed by one year of compulsory rotating internship. Admission is based entirely on NEET UG merit, with all seats filled through the AYUSH Admissions Central Counseling Committee (AACCC) under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. Candidates can register and submit their college preferences at aaccc.gov.in. At the postgraduate level, GACH Patna offers MD/MS (Ayurved) courses across 14 departments with a total PG intake of 85 seats. These include Agad Tantra, Ayurved Samhita, Dravyaguna, Kaumarbhritta, Kayachikitsa, Kriya Sharira, Panchakarma, Prasuti & Striroga, Rachna Sharir, Rasa Shastra, Rog Nidan, Shalya Tantra, Shalakya Tantra, and Swasthvritta & Yoga. PG admissions are based on merit in the All India AYUSH Post Graduate Entrance Test (AIAPGET), with allotment through AACCC. The college also offers a Ph.D. (Ayurved Varidhi) programme with admissions based on an All India Entrance Test conducted by the college itself, as well as a Certificate Course in Panchkarma Technician (intake: 20) and a Diploma in Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences. The college has 16 teaching departments covering the complete spectrum of Ayurvedic education: Rachana Sharir, Kriya Sharir, Panchakarma, Kaya Chikitsha, Dravyaguna, Shalakaya Tantra, Shalaya Tantra, Agad Tantra & Vidhi Vaidhak, Bal Rog (Kaumarbhritta), Ras-Shastra & Bhaishajya Kalpana, Ayurved Samhita & Siddhanta, Rog Nidhan & Vikriti Vigyan, Swasthavritta & Yoga, Prashuti Tantra & Stri Rog, PG Dravyaguna, and PG Ras Shastra. The Department of Samhita Siddhanta & Samskruta was established as early as 1933, and the Department of Swasthavritta was individualized in 1963, reflecting the institution's deep-rooted academic history. The attached Government Ayurvedic Hospital is a fully functional teaching hospital with comprehensive clinical infrastructure. The hospital has a total of 140 beds with a bed occupancy of approximately 47.78%. Clinical statistics on the official website reveal the scale of patient care: total OPD attendance of 1,22,879; total admissions of 2,293; 187 surgical operations (Shalya & Shalakya) performed; 257 patients treated by Kshar Sutra; over 3,100 Panchakarma procedures (Snehan, Swedan, Vaman, Virechan, Basti, Nasya, Raktamokshan, Shirodhara, Shirobasti); 1,404 X-rays, 598 USGs, and over 6,080 laboratory investigations. The hospital's diagnostic facilities include radiology (X-ray, USG), a central laboratory for haematological, biochemical, serological, and microbiological tests, and a Panchakarma unit. The campus infrastructure is state-of-the-art for a government Ayurveda institution. The college features well-equipped classrooms, departmental practical laboratories, a herbal medicinal plant garden, a central library stocked with ancient Ayurvedic texts and modern medical research publications, an Ayurvedic pharmacy for preparing authentic formulations, an auditorium, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, IT infrastructure, and a sports facility. Separate boys' and girls' hostels are available on campus, providing comfortable residential facilities to outstation students. The administration of GACH Patna is headed by Dr. (Prof.) Kumari Uma Pandey as Principal and Dr. Sumeshwar Singh as Hospital Superintendent. The faculty comprises experienced Ayurvedic practitioners, eminent researchers, and dedicated academicians committed to nurturing the next generation of Ayurvedic professionals. The institution is also actively involved in research and innovation, focusing on developing evidence-based Ayurvedic interventions, exploring synergies between Ayurveda and modern medicine, and investigating pharmacological properties of traditional Ayurvedic formulations. As a government institution running since 1926 with nearly a century of legacy, GACH Patna remains the most sought-after destination for NEET UG and AIAPGET aspirants in Bihar seeking a world-class Ayurvedic medical education at an affordable, government-regulated fee. Its central Patna location, strong NCISM recognition, comprehensive UG and PG programmes, active research culture, and excellent clinical exposure through the attached 140-bed hospital make it a true centre of Ayurvedic excellence in eastern India.
