About MS

A Master of Surgery (MS) is a three-year postgraduate medical degree for MBBS graduates who have completed their compulsory internship. It's the surgical counterpart to MD, allowing doctors to specialize deeply in a surgical branch of medicine, combining hands-on operative training with structured research work.

Admission to MS seats across India is primarily through NEET PG, the same exam used for MD, followed by centralized or state-level counselling based on rank and category — whether a seat is MS (surgical) or MD (medical) is decided by the specialty chosen during counselling, not a separate exam. A parallel exam, INI-CET, governs admission to AIIMS, JIPMER, PGIMER, and other Institutes of National Importance. The program is structured around operative postings in the first two years, followed by a thesis and senior residency responsibilities in the final year.
