CAT gets all the attention, but it is not the only route into a good MBA. Every year, lakhs of candidates build strong management careers through four other national-level exams - CMAT, XAT, MAT and ATMA - which together are accepted by well over a thousand AICTE-approved B-schools across India. This guide lays out exactly which exam suits which kind of aspirant, which colleges accept each score, and what the verified dates and cutoffs look like heading into the 2027 admission cycle.
Why You Don't Need CAT to Get a Good MBA
CAT scores are used mainly by the IIMs and a handful of other institutes. Several strong, well-placed B-schools never ask for a CAT score at all. XLRI Jamshedpur runs its own XAT. Institutes like JBIMS, SIMSREE, KJ Somaiya and PUMBA in Mumbai and Pune primarily go by CMAT. Hundreds of private universities and autonomous B-schools across the country accept MAT or ATMA. So a low CAT score, or no CAT attempt at all, does not close the door on a quality MBA - it just changes which door you walk through.
CMAT: The Widest Net Among AICTE-Approved Colleges
CMAT (Common Management Admission Test) is conducted by the National Testing Agency and is used by more AICTE-approved MBA/PGDM colleges than any other non-CAT exam. It's a 3-hour, 100-question computer-based test covering Quantitative Techniques, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, General Awareness, and Innovation & Entrepreneurship. CMAT is generally considered easier than CAT or XAT, which makes it a popular first choice for candidates who want strong college options without an extremely steep prep curve.

XAT: For Candidates Who Want XLRI and the Decision-Making Edge

It's known for a unique Decision Making section, five answer options per question, and no sectional time limits. XAT is generally considered tougher than CMAT and MAT, particularly in verbal ability and decision making, but it opens the door to some genuinely strong institutes beyond XLRI itself.

MAT (Management Aptitude Test), conducted by AIMA since 1988, is unique in offering four sessions every year -February, May, September and December - in Paper-Based (PBT), Computer-Based (CBT) and Internet-Based (IBT) formats. Colleges typically consider the best score within the one-year validity window, so candidates get more than one shot at improving their percentile without waiting a full year, unlike CAT.

ATMA: A Reliable Backup With Multiple Sessions

It tests verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning and analytical ability over 180 questions in 3 hours. While it doesn't carry the same brand weight as CMAT or XAT, it's a dependable option for candidates who want extra attempts or are targeting good regional B-schools.

How to Choose the Right Exam for You
- Shortlist colleges first, then work backwards to the exam — check each college's official admission page, since accepted exams and cutoffs change every cycle.
- If you want maximum reach across AICTE-approved colleges with one test, prioritise CMAT.
- If XLRI or its peer institutes are on your list and you're comfortable with a tougher, more varied paper, prepare for XAT.
- If you want multiple attempts to improve your percentile within the same year, use MAT's four sessions strategically.
- Use ATMA as a genuine backup or for additional attempts, not as your only exam.
- Many serious candidates take two or three of these exams in the same cycle to maximise the number of colleges they can apply to.
Step-by-Step: Applying for an MBA Without CAT
- Register for CMAT, XAT, MAT and/or ATMA on their respective official websites well before the deadline.
- Take the exam and download your scorecard once results are declared.
- Shortlist colleges based on your percentile against each college's previous-year cutoff.
- Apply separately to each shortlisted college's own admission portal an exam score alone does not equal admission at most institutes.
- Prepare for Group Discussion (GD), Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) rounds, since final selection almost always includes these.
- Track each college's individual counselling or admission timeline, as these run independently of the exam's own schedule.
Final Word
A CAT score is one route to an MBA, not the only one. CMAT, XAT, MAT and ATMA collectively cover more than a thousand recognised business schools in India, several of them with genuinely strong placement records. Picking the right exam or combination of exams based on your target colleges, and applying early to each institute's own admission process, matters far more than which single test you write.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a good MBA without writing CAT at all?
Yes. CMAT, XAT, MAT and ATMA together are accepted by well over a thousand AICTE-approved B-schools, including strong institutes like XLRI, JBIMS, PUMBA, K J Somaiya, GIM Goa and MICA, none of which require a CAT score.
Which is easier: CMAT, XAT or MAT?
MAT and CMAT are generally considered easier than XAT, which is known for its tougher verbal section and unique Decision Making section. MAT also offers four attempts a year, giving candidates more room to improve their score.
How many colleges accept XAT apart from XLRI?
More than 250 B-schools formally accept XAT scores, including XIM University Bhubaneswar, MICA, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI New Delhi, TAPMI Manipal, Great Lakes Chennai and FORE New Delhi.
Does scoring well in CMAT/XAT/MAT/ATMA guarantee admission?
No. A good score only makes you eligible to apply; final admission at almost every institute also depends on Group Discussion, Written Ability Test and Personal Interview rounds, plus academic profile.
Can I take more than one of these exams in the same year?
Yes, and many candidates do. Since CMAT and XAT are held once a year while MAT and ATMA run multiple sessions, combining exams is a common strategy to maximise the number of colleges you can apply to.
When is the next CMAT and MAT exam after September 2026?
CMAT is typically held once a year in January; CMAT 2027 dates were not yet officially confirmed as of this writing. MAT's next scheduled session after September 2026 is the December 2026 session.
