About Action For Autism - National Centre for Autism
Action For Autism (AFA), run out of the National Centre for Autism in Jasola Vihar, New Delhi, is a not-for-profit organization that pioneered the autism movement in South Asia. Founded in 1994 as the first school in India specializing in education for children with autism, AFA today works across the lifespan — early intervention, education, assessments, work and employment, independent living, advocacy, and research — through wings such as Open Door (clinical services), AADHAAR (vocational centre), Anvay (research and training), AAHAAN (publications), and AAILAAN (advocacy). Its National Centre for Autism was inaugurated by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi in 2007. On the training side, AFA runs a 2-year B.Ed. Special Education (Autism Spectrum Disorder) degree programme in affiliation with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) and recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), as well as a 2-year Diploma in Education Special Education (Autism Spectrum Disorders), conducted in affiliation with NIEPMD, Chennai. Both programmes combine theoretical grounding with practical, hands-on exposure to working with individuals on the autism spectrum, and graduates typically go on to work as special educators in mainstream or special schools, autism-focused organizations, or as independent consultants; many are also absorbed into AFA itself.
