About All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS), New Delhi

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS Delhi) is India's premier and most prestigious medical institution, consistently ranked #1 in India and recognised globally. The idea arose in 1946 following the Health Survey and Development Committee (Bhore Committee) Report. The foundation stone was laid in 1952, and AIIMS was formally established under the AIIMS Act, 1956 — making it a fully autonomous Institute of National Importance, not affiliated to any university. Originally proposed by PM Jawaharlal Nehru for Calcutta, it was established in New Delhi. The institute was championed by India's first Health Minister Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, after whom the OPD blocks are named. The 213.12-acre main campus in Ansari Nagar, South Delhi, is divided into five sub-campuses: the East Campus (OPD Block, Main Hospital, Ward Block, Medical College, Research Section, Convergence Block, BB Dixit Library, Administrative Wing, UG Hostels, Jawaharlal Auditorium, and Central Lawn) and four Specialty Centres — Cardiothoracic & Neurosciences, Cancer (Dr. BRA IRCH), Ophthalmic Sciences, and Dental Education & Research (CDER). The hospital has 3,000+ functional beds expanding to ~5,500 beds under a major redevelopment project, and handles 13,000+ OPD patients daily — one of the busiest hospitals in Asia. A 60-bed Comprehensive Rural Health Centre in Ballabgarh, Haryana, provides rural medicine exposure. AIIMS Delhi offers 40+ departments, 15+ specialty centres, and programmes including MBBS (132 seats), MD (123 seats), MS, MDS, DM, M.Ch, B.Sc Nursing, B.Sc Paramedical, M.Sc, MHA, and Ph.D. It has been ranked #1 Medical College in India by NIRF for 8+ consecutive years (2025), #1 by India Today (2024), #1 Government College by Outlook India (2024), and 127th globally in Medicine by QS World University Rankings 2024. As the forerunner of India's 25-campus AIIMS network, AIIMS Delhi is the gold standard of medical education, research, and patient care in India.

No. AIIMS Delhi MBBS graduates have NO compulsory rural/government service bond — a major advantage over all state government medical colleges (where penalties can be ₹10–25 lakhs). After MBBS and the 1-year internship (stipend ~₹25,000–27,500/month), graduates have complete freedom: appear for INI-CET, join government/private hospitals, pursue research, or seek international fellowships — with no restriction.

132 total MBBS seats: UR/General (Indian) – 46; Foreign Nationals – 7 (via MEA/MoHFW, no NEET required); EWS – 10; OBC (NCL) – 27; SC – 15; ST – 7. PwBD: 5% horizontal across categories. 100% AIQ via MCC — absolutely NO state quota, management quota, or NRI quota. This is a fundamental distinction from every other medical college in India.
