All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Madurai (AIIMS Madurai) is a premier central government medical institution and an Institute of National Importance being developed at Thoppur, near Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Sanctioned in 2018 and formally established through a Ministry of Health and Family Welfare gazette notification on July 3, 2020, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), AIIMS Madurai commenced its first academic session in 2021 with an inaugural batch of 50 MBBS students, currently running from a temporary campus at Government Rajaji Medical College, Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu.\n\nThe permanent campus is under construction at Thoppur, Austinpatti, near Madurai, and is intended to serve as a major tertiary referral centre for southern Tamil Nadu and the wider region once completed, with a planned hospital capacity of over 750 beds. As one of the newer AIIMS institutions sanctioned under PMSSY, the institute is in the process of building out its academic departments, faculty strength, and clinical infrastructure.\n\nThe institute's academic structure is being developed to eventually cover the entire spectrum of modern medicine — from General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, and Ophthalmology to Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Community Medicine, and Psychiatry, among others. The institute follows the curriculum of AIIMS New Delhi, ensuring nationally standardized, research-integrated medical education for its MBBS students even while operating from the temporary campus.\n\nAt present, AIIMS Madurai offers only the MBBS undergraduate programme, with postgraduate (MD/MS), paramedical, nursing, and doctoral programmes expected to be introduced in a phased manner as the permanent campus and hospital infrastructure come online. The institute is actively working on hostel accommodation arrangements for its growing student strength as it transitions toward its permanent campus.\n\nMBBS admission at AIIMS Madurai is exclusively through NEET UG, with seat allotment via MCC AIQ counselling. The NEET 2024 closing rank for the General category was around 4,531 (Round 1), reflecting its position among the newer, still-developing AIIMS institutions with relatively higher closing ranks compared to older campuses like AIIMS Delhi or Jodhpur. The total MBBS fee for the entire programme is approximately ₹6,750, among the most affordable medical education options in India, and interns receive a monthly stipend as per AIIMS norms.\n\nAs a newer AIIMS, Madurai is steadily building its academic and clinical reputation. It is ranked among the top institutions in Tamil Nadu in the medical category by Collegedunia, and is part of the growing network of AIIMS institutions working to expand access to advanced medical education and specialized healthcare in southern India.
