All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Madurai (AIIMS Madurai) is a prestigious Institute of National Importance established by the Government of India via gazette notification on 3 July 2020 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). Currently operating from a temporary campus at the Government Medical College in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, with its mentor institute being JIPMER, Puducherry. The permanent campus is under construction at Thoppur, Madurai, funded with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and expected to be completed by 2028. AIIMS Madurai offers 50 MBBS seats annually, with admission exclusively through NEET UG and MCC centralized counselling. The planned permanent facility will house 15–20 super-specialty departments, approximately 750 beds, and accommodate postgraduate, doctoral, and super-specialty programs once operational. The institute aims to bridge regional healthcare disparities in southern India through cutting-edge medical education, research, and community-centered healthcare.

AIIMS Madurai currently offers only MBBS at the undergraduate level. Postgraduate (MD, MS), super-specialty (DM, MCh), doctoral (PhD) and BSc nursing programs are expected to be introduced in phased manner once the permanent campus and hospital at Thoppur, Madurai are fully operational (by 2028).
AIIMS Madurai is currently operating from a temporary campus at the Government Medical College, Ramanathapuram (623503), Tamil Nadu. The permanent campus is under construction at Thoppur, Madurai, and is expected to be ready by 2028.
