Strategically positioned in nearby proximity to Ganges, AIIMS Rishikesh has been established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna to minimize geographical health care gaps. It became independent by the AIIMS Amendment Bill, 2012. The institute started with 50 MBBS and BSc Nursing students in 2012, and outpatient and inpatient services were also started within one year. Gradually, AIIMS Rishikesh has developed into an Institute of National Importance providing MBBS, BSc & MSc Nursing, MD/MS/MDS, MCh (6 years), DM/MCh, PDCC, MPH, Medical MSc, Ph.D, etc. The activities are conducted by over 200 senior teaching faculty members. The clinical load has risen from a small facility to 94 subspecialty outpatient clinics and 960-bed inpatient hospital, doubled from the initial 200 beds. The Emergency Department now consists of standalone trauma surgery and emergency medicine wings, operating 24×7×365. The administrative processes have moved to paperless e-governance mode, making the processes more efficient. The institute gives special stress to electronic health records, telemedicine and integrated health care. AIIMS Rishikesh is also engaged in research and innovation with financial support and infrastructural facility to carry out basic, clinical, and public health research. Labs and research institutions are upgraded continuously to international standards. The institution has collaborative connections with national as well as foreign bodies for research in medicine and faculty development. The student life at AIIMS Rishikesh is rich with the prospect of participation in seminars, workshops, community health activities, and outreach in clinics. It holds routine medical camps and health awareness programs in Uttarakhand and adjoining states.
