About Amala Institute of Medical Sciences
Amala Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Thrissur — known as 'Home for Total Healing' — is a private Christian minority medical institution established in 2003 by the Devamatha Province of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), an indigenous religious congregation founded in 1831 by St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara. The college grew out of the Amala Cancer Hospital, which was inaugurated on 25 April 1978 by then President of India Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, and the Amala Cancer Research Centre established in 1984. On 8 August 2003, the Medical Council of India granted a Letter of Permission (LOP) for the MBBS program with an initial intake of 100 seats. The campus is set on the slopes of the Vilangan Hills, spreading over a tranquil 40-acre eco-friendly campus about 7 km from Thrissur city centre, accessible 24 hours by road. AIMS offers MBBS (100 seats), PG MD/MS courses across 18 departments, and Super Specialty DM/MCh courses in 3 departments. Its teaching hospital — a 1,000-bed super specialty and cardiac centre — is equipped with 25 state-of-the-art operation theatres, 210 fully equipped ICU beds, a digital radiology department, a fully computerised Hospital Information System (HIS), and 1,150+ outpatients daily. AIMS holds NABH, NABL, NAAC and ISO certifications, and has an international collaboration with the Ohio State University Medical School, USA for staff-student exchange, research, and twinning programmes.
