About Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute
Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), popularly known as BMC or BMCRI Bangalore, is one of India's oldest, most prestigious, and highly competitive government medical institutions, located in the heart of Bengaluru, Karnataka. Established in 1955, the college was founded under the Mysore Medical Education Society by visionary physicians Dr. R. Shivaram, Dr. Mohammed Shafi Mekhri, Dr. B.K. Narayana Rao, and Dr. B.V. Ramaswamy. It was initially housed at the Fort Police Station ground and was later transferred to the Government of Mysore in 1957. The college has been affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) since 1996 and is fully recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Today, BMCRI stands as the premier government medical college in Karnataka, consistently ranked among the top medical institutions in India. Spread over a sprawling 200-acre campus located at K.R. Road near City Market, BMCRI's infrastructure integrates academic blocks, world-class hospital complexes, digital and physical libraries, student hostels, sports facilities, and state-of-the-art laboratories — all within a single, connected urban environment. The campus houses a new 8-floor academic building fully equipped for 250 students, including modern classrooms with projectors, air conditioning, anatomy demonstration halls, forensic labs, microbiology labs, pathology labs, and a skill development lab. The Clinical Skills Centre, inaugurated in 2011 and developed at a cost of ₹95 lakhs with contributions from BMCRI alumni, Infosys Foundation, and GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, provides state-of-the-art simulation-based clinical training to undergraduate students. Academic excellence at BMCRI spans undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty programs. At the undergraduate level, BMCRI offers the MBBS program with an intake of 250 seats per year, which is the largest among government medical colleges in Bengaluru. At the postgraduate level, the institution offers 280 PG seats across MD and MS specializations covering over 20 disciplines including General Medicine, Paediatrics, Anaesthesiology, Radio Diagnosis, Psychiatry, Dermatology, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. At the super-specialty (DM/MCh) level, BMCRI offers programs in Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Urology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, and Surgical Gastroenterology. The college also offers B.Sc. degrees in Nursing and multiple Allied Health Sciences disciplines including Cardiac Care Technology, Anaesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology, Medical Imaging Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Radiotherapy Technology, and Renal Dialysis Technology. The institution's greatest academic asset is its network of affiliated teaching hospitals. The Victoria Hospital, one of India's second-largest public hospitals, provides over 1,000 beds and handles over 5,000 out-patients daily. Vanivilas Women and Children's Hospital is a leading public maternity and paediatric facility with 536 beds. Minto Ophthalmic Hospital is a premier super-specialty eye hospital. The PMSSY Super Specialty Hospital (Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana) offers advanced tertiary care. Together, these five hospitals bring the total bed strength to well over 3,000 beds, offering BMCRI students unparalleled clinical exposure across virtually all medical disciplines including cardiology, neurosurgery, neurology, gastroenterology, urology, nephrology, oncology, and emergency trauma care. BMCRI has a dedicated digital library featuring 80 connected nodes providing access to the latest national and international medical journals, e-resources, and research databases. The physical central library spans 3,000 sq. meters and houses over 50,000 books, reference texts, and periodicals. A Tele-Medicine unit, established in collaboration with ISRO, makes BMCRI the first government medical college in Karnataka to offer this facility. A Mahabodhi Burns Centre with an associated Skin Bank provides specialized burns care and serves as a teaching unit for students. Hostel facilities at BMCRI are available for UG, PG, and intern students in separate blocks. Boys' hostels are named Bheema, Varuna, and Thunga. The girls' hostel is named Kaveri. Rooms are shared (typically 3 per room for UGs) and are equipped with basic furnishings, study areas, gymnasium access, and 24-hour Wi-Fi. Mess facilities provide hygienic food within the campus. Sports infrastructure includes basketball courts, volleyball courts, indoor games facilities, and a small cricket ground. The campus also provides a pharmacy, 24-hour electricity backup, and emergency medical services. Faculty quality at BMCRI is widely recognized, with all professors, associate professors, and assistant professors holding post-doctoral qualifications in their respective specializations. The institution functions with a strong research orientation, encourages collaborative research projects, and has published extensively in national and international peer-reviewed medical journals. Students are actively encouraged to participate in cultural events, sports, research presentations, and academic conferences. Placements and career prospects for BMCRI graduates are strong. As a government medical college, students who complete MBBS are required to serve a compulsory internship of 1 year in affiliated hospitals at a stipend of approximately ₹30,000 per month. Post-internship, graduates are eligible for government medical officer positions, NEET PG admissions, or positions in private multispecialty hospitals. Postgraduate and super-specialty alumni of BMCRI have gone on to practice at leading institutions across India and internationally. Fresh MBBS graduates typically earn ₹8–12 LPA in private sector roles, while postgraduates and super-specialists command ₹15–35 LPA depending on the specialty. BMCRI is ranked #16 in the Medical category in India by India Today (2025) and #9 by The Week. It consistently features among the top government medical colleges in India in NIRF rankings. With government-regulated fees, exceptional clinical exposure, top-tier faculty, and a century-long legacy of producing outstanding medical professionals, BMCRI Bangalore remains the most sought-after and competitive government medical college in Karnataka for NEET aspirants across the country.
