About Birla Institute of Applied Sciences
Birla Institute of Applied Sciences (BIAS) is a unique and prestigious engineering institution with a rich legacy stretching back to 1969, when it was founded as the Birla Institute of Scientific Research (BISR) by the legendary Indian industrialist Shri B.M. Birla. Located in Bhimtal — a scenic hill town in Nainital district, Uttarakhand — at an altitude of 1,370 metres above sea level, BIAS is situated approximately 19 km from Kathgodam Railway Station on the Haldwani–Almora Road and approximately 37 km from Haldwani Roadways Bus Stand. The campus is spread over 20 acres of lush, green, picturesque, pollution-free terrain, making it one of the most aesthetically distinctive engineering campuses in India. BIAS is approved by AICTE and affiliated with Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU), Dehradun, and also with Kumaun University, Nainital for certain programmes. The institution has a signed MoU with NASSCOM, which has established a Digital Lab within the BIAS campus to promote computer literacy in the surrounding semi-urban and rural communities — a clear indicator of BIAS's commitment to social outreach alongside academic excellence. The institute is fully residential in nature. The campus houses five boys' hostels with a capacity of approximately 300 students, and one girls' hostel with a capacity of approximately 200 students — seven hostels in total as confirmed by student reviews. All academic blocks and hostels are Wi-Fi enabled. The residential nature of the campus creates a tight-knit academic community. Facilities include a dispensary, an ambulance for healthcare emergencies, a cafeteria, a computer centre, various engineering and computing laboratories (including CCNA Lab, Microprocessor Lab, Electronics Lab, and Computer Labs), a library with UTU e-Library access, and a Green Energy Research Lab. Academically, BIAS focuses on a deliberately small and focused course portfolio, offering B.Tech in two specialisations: Computer Science Engineering (CSE, 180 seats) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (E&CE, 30 seats). B.Tech (Lateral Entry) is available in both branches. At the postgraduate level, MCA (2 years) is offered. BCA (3 years, Bachelor of Computer Applications) is also offered. This intentionally compact academic programme ensures a favourable student-to-faculty ratio and a more personal and focused learning environment compared to larger institutions. Admissions to B.Tech are based on JEE Main scores and UKSEE (Uttarakhand State Entrance Examination) counselling through UTU. The minimum eligibility is 50% in 10+2 with PCM as compulsory subjects. The fee structure at BIAS is moderately priced for a hill-based residential engineering college. The approximate total 4-year B.Tech fee (hostel included) is ₹7.27 Lakhs (odd semester: ₹91,425; even semester: ₹85,800; first semester: ₹1,09,725). This includes tuition (odd: ₹54,000; even: ₹51,000), hostel (₹8,000/semester), hostel mess (₹18,000/semester), Wi-Fi, alumni, student activity, electricity, water, and sports charges. Day boarders have a separate fee structure. The standalone tuition fee is approximately ₹4.97 Lakhs total for 4 years (without hostel). The Training and Placement Cell at BIAS maintains active industry relationships. In the 2021–22 academic year, placement records showed 85% for B.Tech batches. Average salary varies from ₹3–4 LPA. IT companies regularly visit the campus for recruitment. The small batch size (only 210 B.Tech seats total) means more personalised attention during placements. Student societies at BIAS include the Cultural Society, Literary Society, Sports Society, Google Developers Club (GDC), and Technoforum Club, reflecting a balanced approach to extracurricular development. The scenic Kumaun Hills setting surrounding the campus adds a unique quality-of-life dimension rarely found in any Indian engineering institution.
