Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) was initially constituted as the University of Cochin through an Act of the Kerala Government on 10th July 1971, and was re-constituted as Cochin University of Science and Technology in February 1986, redefining its objectives as 'promoting Graduate and Post-Graduate studies and Advanced Research in Applied Sciences, Technology, Industry, Commerce, Management and Social Sciences.' Located at Thrikkakara, Kochi, the University's 180-acre main campus houses the Administrative Office, Central Library, Computer Centre, School of Engineering, hostels and playgrounds, in addition to the Lakeside Campus (School of Marine Sciences, Ernakulam) and the Pulincunnu Campus, Kuttanad (Cochin University College of Engineering, Kuttanad - CUCEK), spread across 3 campuses with over 9,000 students and 460 faculty members. CUSAT is a premier Science and Technology University, re-accredited with NAAC 'A+' Grade (3rd cycle, CGPA 3.39/4, October 2022) and has consecutively figured in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings since 2017 and the QS World University Rankings, besides being ranked in India's NIRF framework (Overall Rank 32 in 2025). All B.Tech programmes of the School of Engineering have been reaccredited by NBA under Tier I Category till December 2028. The Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research (ACARR), one of CUSAT's many Centres of Excellence, is included in the Prime Minister's 'Make in India' Programme. CUSAT offers 24 Undergraduate, 55 Postgraduate, 9 Pre-Doctoral and 28 Doctoral programmes (as listed on cusat.ac.in) across 30 academic departments/centres and schools including the School of Engineering, Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttanad, Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering, Department of Computer Applications, Department of Computer Science, International School of Photonics, School of Legal Studies, School of Management Studies, School of Environmental Studies, School of Industrial Fisheries, and departments spanning Marine Sciences, Applied Chemistry, Biotechnology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Applied Economics, English and Foreign Languages, and Hindi. Admissions to all programmes are through CUSAT's own Common Admission Test (CAT), conducted by the Directorate of Admissions; the Admissions portal (7,500+ students, 70+ programmes) reports 150+ recruiters visiting the campus and 900+ students receiving placements every year, with 1,500+ cumulative placements highlighted on the portal. The University runs 14 hostels (8 for boys, 6 for girls) at the Main and Lakeside campuses, accommodating around 600 male and 700 female UG/PG/Research students. Campus facilities include the Central Library with a 'Special Collections Section', a Primary Health Centre, Employment Bureau, Seminar Complex, Open Air Auditorium, Sports Arena, a Miyawaki mini-forest, rainwater-harvesting pond, SBI branch and ATMs, post office, BSNL centre, and the MyByk campus cycle-sharing scheme.
