About Coochbehar Government Medical College & Hospital, Coochbehar, WB
Maharaja Jitendra Narayan Medical College and Hospital (MJNMCH), previously known as Coochbehar Government Medical College and Hospital (CGMCH), is a government medical institution established in the remote northern part of West Bengal in Coochbehar district. The college was developed by upgrading the existing historic MJN District Hospital (Maharaja Jitendra Narayan Hospital) beginning in 2017-18. The institution was officially inaugurated on 22 February 2019 by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee โ a date now celebrated as its Foundation Day. The first batch of 100 MBBS students was admitted in the 2019-20 session after receiving permission from the Medical Council of India (MCI). Affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), MJNMCH currently admits 100 MBBS students annually (with LOP granted for increase to 150 from AY 2025-26). DNB postgraduate programmes commenced from AY 2021-22. The 25-acre campus is located adjacent to Panchanan Barma University, with the college, district hospital, administrative office, and hostel buildings all within the same campus. MJNMCH is located in one of the remotest parts of West Bengal near the Bhutan and Bangladesh borders, making it a unique opportunity for students seeking government medical education with government-subsidised fees in North Bengal. The attached MJN Hospital with over 500 beds serves as the primary teaching hospital, providing extensive clinical exposure for students.
