About Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College & Hospital

Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College & Hospital (Dr. SMCSI MCH), popularly known as Karakonam Medical College, is a prestigious self-financing private Christian minority medical institution established in 2002. It is located in Karakonam, a serene village on the southern border of the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. The college is attached to the Dr. Somervell Memorial Mission Hospital — the first private hospital established in Kerala (1894, reorganized 1975) — and is run by the South Kerala Diocese of the Church of South India (CSI), managed by the South Kerala Medical Mission. This is the only CSI medical college across the five southern states of India and Sri Lanka. The college is affiliated with Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), Thrissur, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Spread over a 25-acre campus, the institution offers 150 MBBS seats and 41+ PG seats across MD/MS specialties. The attached multi-specialty teaching hospital has 695 beds with 30 dedicated emergency beds, modular OTs, ICU, NICU, Cath Lab, CT Scan, MRI, DSA, dialysis, IVF unit, and super-specialty services in Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Neurology, and more. The institution is guided by its mission of providing competent, compassionate, and affordable healthcare to the economically weaker sections of society.
