Dr. Vaishampayan Memorial Government Medical College (VMGMC), Solapur is one of the oldest government medical colleges in Maharashtra. It was founded in 1963 by Dr. Vishnu Ganesh Vaishampayan as a private medical college, received undergraduate (MBBS) recognition in 1974, and was taken over by the Government of Maharashtra in 1977, since when it has been run by the state's Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Mumbai. The college is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). VMGMC is attached to the Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sarvopchar Rugnalaya (Civil Hospital), a government teaching hospital located opposite the District Court in Solapur city. The hospital has a sanctioned bed strength of 763 beds across general and specialty wards, alongside outpatient, radiology, laboratory, and operation theatre facilities used for undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training. The college offers the MBBS undergraduate programme (100 seats per year per NMC records; commonly cited as around 150-200 total intake including state and central quotas in recent years) admitted through NEET-UG, with 15% seats filled via the All India Quota (MCC counselling) and 85% through the Maharashtra State Quota (State CET Cell counselling). VMGMC also runs numerous postgraduate MD/MS and Diploma programmes across pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical departments, admitted through NEET-PG via All India Quota and Maharashtra State Quota counselling, along with DNB programmes in select specialties. Academic departments span pre-clinical (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry), para-clinical (Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology) and clinical streams (General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Anaesthesia, Radio-diagnosis, Respiratory Medicine, Dermatology & VD, Psychiatry, Preventive & Social Medicine, and Dentistry). The college also has a Medical Research Society (MRS), a Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit (MRU), and an Institutional Ethics Committee overseeing student and faculty research. As a state government college, MBBS fees are heavily subsidised (tuition of roughly Rs. 1 lakh per year or lower for state-quota students, per DMER Maharashtra fee notifications), making VMGMC one of the most affordable routes to an MBBS degree in India for Maharashtra-domicile students. The campus includes separate UG and PG hostels for boys and girls (with roughly 90% of enrolled students accommodated), a central library, sports and gymkhana facilities, and residential quarters for faculty.
