About Gandhi Medical College, Secunderabad
Gandhi Medical College (GMC), Secunderabad, is one of the most prestigious government medical institutions in Telangana, established in 1954 and named in honour of Mahatma Gandhi. Its history predates the college itself — rooted in 1851 when it was founded as a military infirmary of just 3 wards in Secunderabad Cantonment. By 1900, it had grown into a Cantonment Hospital with 95 beds, then transformed into the King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in 1913, and was renamed Gandhi Hospital in 1958 to coincide with its establishment as the teaching hospital for Gandhi Medical College. The college was initially known as People's Medical College and was inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, in 1955. Originally located at Humayun Nagar, it moved to Basheerbagh in 1958, and finally to its current sprawling campus at Musheerabad in 2003. The college is affiliated with the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), Warangal, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), New Delhi. It holds an A+ accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), reflecting its outstanding academic and institutional quality. GMC Secunderabad is ranked #63 nationally in the Medical Category by Collegedunia (2025), making it one of the top government medical colleges in South India. GMC Secunderabad offers MBBS (250 seats), MD (17 courses), MS (5 courses), DM/MCh super-specialty courses across 10 disciplines, BSc Allied Health Sciences, BSc MLT, and paramedical programs — making it a comprehensive hub of medical education and research in Telangana. The college is a Non-Minority, Government institution with no management or NRI quota seats. All admissions are strictly merit-based through MCC All India Quota (AIQ – 15%) and KNRUHS Telangana State Quota (85%). The MBBS fee structure for 2024-25 (as per official GMC Secunderabad records) is: Tuition Fee – ₹10,000/year (OC/BC); CDS – ₹5,000 (one-time); E-Library – ₹2,000/year; Central Stores – ₹2,000 (one-time); Library Fee – ₹2,000/year; Caution Deposit – ₹3,000 (one-time); Academic Development Fund – ₹3,000 (OC/BC, one-time); Non-Government Fund – ₹2,000 (one-time). Total MBBS first-year fee: ₹29,000 (OC/BC) and ₹27,000 (SC/ST). The hostel fee per year is ₹23,000 including rent (₹1,000/month × 12), caution deposit ₹5,000 (refundable), non-refundable deposit ₹5,000, and application fee ₹1,000. The total MBBS course fees amount to approximately ₹60,000 over the full programme (Collegedunia). The attached Gandhi Hospital is a premier government tertiary care hospital, one of the largest in Telangana and the twin cities of Hyderabad-Secunderabad. It provides comprehensive medical services across general medicine, surgery, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, neurosurgery, trauma care, obstetrics, paediatrics, and super-specialty disciplines. The hospital has massive daily OPD and IPD flow providing MBBS and PG students with unrivalled clinical exposure. Payment for fees is made via DD/Online in favour of 'CDS, Gandhi Medical College, Secunderabad' at State Bank of India (Account No: 52099020301, IFSC: SBIN0020256, Branch: New Bhoiguda, Secunderabad). University Fees for AIQ students: ₹12,000 via DD in favour of 'The Registrar, KNR University of Health Sciences, Warangal'. GMC Secunderabad houses a well-equipped library with a comfortable reading room, E-library with free Wi-Fi, canteen with faculty lounge, separate common rooms and gyms for boys and girls, auditorium, and facilities for cricket, basketball, tennis, volleyball, and indoor games. Separate hostels for boys and girls are available within campus with affordable and nutritious food. The college has a dedicated metro station right in front, making it highly accessible. The PG programme at GMC Secunderabad is highly sought-after. PG residents receive a monthly stipend of ₹58,000–₹65,000 depending on year of study. A 1-year compulsory service bond with a penalty of ₹20 lakhs is applicable post-PG completion. 50% of PG seats are filled through MCC AIQ and 50% through KNRUHS State Quota. The college is home to a NMC Regional Centre for Medical Education Technology and an active Academic Council, Ethical Committee, Anti-Ragging Committee, Gender Harassment and Internal Complaints Committees, HICC Committee, and a Curriculum Committee — all ensuring an academically rigorous and safe environment for students.
