About Goa Medical College, Panaji
Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim, is one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia and the only government medical college in the state of Goa. Its roots trace back to 1842 when the Portuguese established the 'Escola Medico Cirurgica da Goa'. Renamed as Goa Medical College in 1963, it was first affiliated to Bombay University and then to Goa University in 1986. Originally located in the heart of Panjim in a Portuguese-era structure, the college relocated to its present sprawling campus in Bambolim in 1993. Approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and affiliated to Goa University, GMC offers 200 MBBS seats, postgraduate (MD/MS) courses across 20+ departments, and super-specialty (DM/MCh) programs. The college is located on 139 acres adjacent to Goa Dental College, connected by a pedestrian subway. It houses a 1,800-bedded multi-specialty teaching hospital that serves as the only government tertiary care hospital in Goa, providing outstanding clinical exposure to students. The GMC campus includes the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (Bambolim), TB Cunha and Chest Disease Hospital (St. Inez), Rural Health and Training Centre (Mandur, Old Goa), and Urban Health Centre (St. Cruz).
