About Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Guwahati

Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital (GACH), Guwahati, is the pioneering institution of the Indian System of Medicine in the entire Northeast India and the second government medical institute in Assam established after Independence. Founded on 20th December 1948, the college was born out of a powerful vision shared by stalwarts such as Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, then Prime Minister of Assam, Dr. Jagdish Chandra Bhattacharya, the founding Principal, and Lokbandhu Bhuvaneswar Baruah. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's call for Swaraj and guided by the resolutions of the Lahore Congress Session to promote indigenous traditional medicine in each Indian state, the institution was inaugurated at Uzan Bazaar, Guwahati, before shifting to Chandmari in 1949 and finally to its permanent campus at Jalukbari, Guwahati, in July 1959. Situated at the foothills of the historic Nilachal Hill near the south bank of the river Brahmaputra, the college occupies a serene and accessible location just 800 metres from the National Highway. This strategic position makes it easily reachable for students and patients from across Assam and the broader Northeast region. Previously affiliated with Gauhati University, the college was brought under the academic ambit of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, Assam, in 2010, following which it adopted the syllabus and curriculum prescribed by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM). Over its 75-year journey, GACH Guwahati has produced approximately 3,000 Ayurvedic doctors who serve across government health systems and private practices throughout Assam and beyond. The institution started as a 4.5-year diploma programme with an annual intake of just 25 students; it has since evolved into a full-fledged degree-granting institution with an undergraduate BAMS intake of 63 students and a postgraduate MD/MS (Ayurveda) programme across 6 departments with 30 PG scholars. Academically, GACH Guwahati offers the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), a 5.5-year programme that includes a 1-year compulsory rotatory internship covering departments such as Kayachikitsa, Shalya, Shalakya, Prasuti Tantra, Kaumarabhritya, and Panchakarma. The postgraduate MD/MS (Ayurveda) programme, introduced in 2001 with two departments and expanded to six in 2014, spans Kayachikitsa, Sanskrit Samhita and Siddhanta, Shalya Tantra, Prasuti Tantra and Stree Roga, Roga Nidan, and Rachana Sharir. Admission to the undergraduate programme is based on NEET scores, while PG admissions are conducted through AIAPGET ranks under AACCC counselling. The institution has 14 clinical and academic departments as per CCIM/NCISM norms, covering the full breadth of Ayurvedic specialities from Kaya Chikitsa (General Medicine) and Shalya (Surgery) to Shalakya (ENT and Ophthalmology), Dravyaguna (Pharmacology), Panchakarma, Rasashastra and Bhaisajya Kalpana, Swasthavritta, Agada Tantra, Rachana Sharir, Kriya Sharir, Roga Nidan, Prasuti Tantra, Bala Roga, and Sanskrit Samhita and Siddhanta. This comprehensive departmental structure ensures that students receive a thorough grounding in both classical Ayurvedic texts and practical clinical training. The attached teaching hospital currently operates 150 IPD beds with OPD and IPD services across all clinical departments. A new 300-bed hospital building was sanctioned by the North East Council (NEC) in collaboration with the Government of Assam; the ground floor was inaugurated by the Chief Minister in December 2005 and houses departments including Prasuti and Stree Roga, Kaumarbhritya (Paediatrics), Panchakarma, general and eye operation theatres, diagnostic services (X-Ray, USG, ECG), an immunisation centre, a neonatal baby stabilisation unit, and casualty services. The old hospital block continues to serve Kayachikitsa, Shalya, and Shalakya departments. Infrastructure at GACH Guwahati includes a two-storey central library operational since 2008, housing an extensive collection of Ayurvedic and modern medical texts, journals, thesis papers, digital catalogues, and e-journal subscriptions. Other facilities include a State-Level Ayurvedic Pharmacy that doubles as a practical training unit for students, a Drug Testing Laboratory, a Central Laboratory, a Medicinal Plant Garden, department-wise student practical labs, a Dissection Hall, an Auditorium, a Seminar Hall, an IT Centre, College Canteen, College Bus service, Rasha Shala for practical and production purposes, Pathological Museum, NSS and RRC units, and a Radiology Unit. The campus also houses a DOT's Cell and an NRHM Unit. Hostel facilities are available for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Dr. Jagadish Chandra Bhattacharya Boys' Hostel No. 1, established in 1948, accommodates 120 students; the Priyadarshini Girls' Hostel No. 2, established in 1989, accommodates 80 students; and the Carak Boys' Hostel No. 3, established in 1989, accommodates 63 students. A dedicated PG Scholars' Hostel, established in 2009, accommodates 34 scholars. In 2021, Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Guwahati, was officially declared a Centre of Excellence by the Union AYUSH Minister, recognising its decades of contribution to Ayurvedic education, research, and patient care. As one of Assam's most trusted and historically significant medical institutions, GACH Guwahati continues to blend classical Ayurvedic wisdom with modern academic rigour, making it the foremost destination for students aspiring to pursue Ayurvedic medicine courses in Assam and the Northeast.
