Established in the year 2000, the college is affiliated with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS), Vijayawada, and is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), Government of India. The first batch of 100 MBBS students was admitted in April 2001. Since its inception, GMC Anantapur has steadily grown into one of the most respected medical colleges in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, significantly contributing to the healthcare ecosystem of the state. The college campus sprawls over approximately 35 acres and has a total built-up area exceeding 1,40,000 square meters. College buildings alone occupy over 56,000 square meters, while hospital buildings, OPD blocks, hostel blocks, and residential facilities spread across more than 85,000 square meters. This expansive campus provides a conducive environment for both academic pursuits and personal development. Academics & Courses: GMC Anantapur offers an undergraduate MBBS programme with an annual intake of 150 seats, and 13 postgraduate MD/MS programmes across key medical specialties with a combined intake of 57 seats. The PG specialties include General Medicine, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Psychiatry, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, Anaesthesiology, and Ophthalmology. The undergraduate MBBS programme follows the curriculum prescribed by the National Medical Commission and is spread over 4.5 years of study followed by one year of compulsory rotating internship, making the total duration 5.5 years. Teaching Hospital: The college is attached to the Government General Hospital (GGH), Anantapur — a large, multi-specialty teaching hospital with over 800 inpatient beds. The hospital serves patients from Anantapur and the surrounding Rayalaseema region. It houses departments covering all major clinical specialties including General Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Emergency & Trauma Care, NICU, PICU, RICU, and an ICU with 50 beds and 12 operation theatres. The high patient footfall gives students rich clinical exposure that is critical for building competent medical professionals. Infrastructure & Facilities: The institution is equipped with spacious, modern lecture halls with a seating capacity of 150 each, demonstration rooms, dissection halls, and an examination hall. Well-equipped laboratories support practical training in disciplines such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, and Pharmacology. A central library houses more than 15,000 medical books and subscribes to multiple Indian and international journals. The library also features a dedicated digital section, offering access to online medical databases and e-resources.
