About Government Medical College, Aurangabad
Government Medical College & Hospital, Aurangabad — popularly known as GHATI — is one of Maharashtra's most prestigious government medical institutions and the premier tertiary care hospital for the entire Marathwada region. Established on 15 August 1956 (India's 10th Independence Day), it was initially started with 50 undergraduate students in a small Nizam Bungalow. The foundation stone for the current main building was laid by then Chief Minister Yashwantrao Chavan on 27 October 1957, and the building was inaugurated by Union Health Minister Sushila Nayyar on 20 June 1964. Located on the east bank of the Kham river, near the famous tourist attractions of Panchakki, Bibi Ka Maqbara, and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University — the college occupies a sprawling 99-acre (40-hectare) campus with 30 buildings. It is affiliated to MUHS Nashik, approved by NMC, and administered by DMER, Government of Maharashtra. The campus provides residential facilities for all faculty, staff, and students.
