Government Medical College (GMC), Barmer is a government medical institution established in 2019, located at Village Jalipa on National Highway No. 15, Barmer — the westernmost major district of Rajasthan bordering Pakistan's Sindh province. GMC Barmer is affiliated with the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS), Jaipur, and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It is one of the frontier medical colleges of India, serving the sparse, desert-bound population of the Barmer–Jaisalmer–Sanchore belt of western Rajasthan. Barmer is the second-largest district in Rajasthan by area (28,387 sq km) and is known for its rich cultural heritage — the Barmer Craft (Ajrakh block printing, Barmer embroidery), its oil and gas reserves (Cairn India), and its role in India's strategic western border. The district has historically faced acute healthcare shortfalls — GMC Barmer directly addresses this by training doctors who understand and serve this desert border population. Campus & Infrastructure: The campus at Village Jalipa is equipped with a functional academic block featuring lecture halls, demonstration rooms, departmental laboratories, a central library with standard medical textbooks and journal access, and examination halls. The college follows the NMC CBME curriculum. Hostel facilities for boys and girls are available on or near the campus — hostels are optional (not compulsory). Teaching Hospital: GMC Barmer is attached to a government teaching hospital with approximately 329 beds (per Edufever 2025 citation). The hospital provides 24/7 emergency care, OT, ICU, diagnostic services, Blood Bank, and clinical departments across all major specialties. The hospital serves patients from across the desert districts of Barmer, Jaisalmer, and parts of Jodhpur division — a patient catchment that includes farming, pastoral, and border community populations with unique medical profiles including heat-related illnesses, ophthalmological conditions from desert winds, and endemic infections. PG Courses: GMC Barmer offers PG MD/MS programmes in multiple disciplines — making it one of the more comprehensive newly established Rajasthan GMCs. During 2021–2024, 8 candidates received allotment at GMC Barmer via AIQ counselling — reflecting steady demand. PG admission is via NEET PG and Rajasthan state PG counselling.
