About Government Medical College, Bhadradri Kothagudem
Government Medical College, Bhadradri Kothagudem (GMC Kothagudem) is a new-generation government medical institution established in 2021 by the Government of Telangana. It was granted the first Letter of Permission (LOP) by the National Medical Commission (NMC) on 25th August 2022 with an annual MBBS intake of 150 students. The college is affiliated with the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), Warangal, Telangana. Located in Palvancha, on the historic premises of the Kothagudem School of Mining, the college is set against a backdrop of deep forests and a large tribal population of the Bhadradri Kothagudem district. The institution was founded with a focused vision: to impart world-class medical education with a special emphasis on rural and tribal health, and to train compassionate doctors who deliver high-end medical care to underprivileged communities with a human touch. The campus is strategically accessible — situated just 7 km from Kothagudem bus stand, 6 km from Kothagudem Railway Station, and only 1 km from the new District Collectorate of Bhadradri Kothagudem. It is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, simulation centres, research facilities, and comprehensive academic infrastructure that enables hands-on learning in a clinical environment. The attached teaching hospital is the Government General Hospital (GGH), Kothagudem, which has a total bed strength of 450 beds (as per current NMC records), spread across two main blocks within a 2-km radius. The old block, housed in a recently upgraded 2-storey building across approximately 3.5 acres, contains multiple wards, a laboratory, and a blood bank. The new MCH Block, constructed in 2021 on 10 acres in Ramavaram, has 100 dedicated beds and exclusively caters to the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics. The hospital has 40 emergency beds and maintains a previous month record of 1,895 in-patients and 16,568 out-patients — reflecting a very high OPD and IPD footfall for a newer government institution. Before its elevation, GGH Kothagudem was a 50-bedded government civil hospital (pre-2002), upgraded to 100 beds in 2002, then to ~250 beds as a District Hospital in 2016. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, recognising the dedication of its staff and the high patient load, the Telangana government converted it into a full Government General Hospital with 350 beds (now upgraded to 450). It offers 24×7 emergency services, OPD and IPD, and includes Clinical and Diagnostic Laboratory services across pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical specialties. The college runs a 5.5-year MBBS programme (4.5 years of academic study + 1 year compulsory rotatory internship) with 150 seats per year. The four-year academic curriculum includes: First MBBS (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry), Second MBBS (Pathology, Forensic Medicine, Pharmacology, Microbiology), Final MBBS Part I (ENT, Social Preventive Medicine, Ophthalmology), and Final MBBS Part II (General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology). There are no PG (MD/MS) or super-specialty courses at this stage, consistent with its early-stage establishment. The MBBS fee structure is one of the most affordable in India. Annual first-year fee: ₹29,000 (OC/BC) and ₹27,000 (SC/ST), comprising tuition fee ₹10,000, CDS ₹5,000, e-Library ₹2,000, Central Stores ₹2,000, Library Fees ₹2,000, Caution Deposit ₹3,000, Academic Development Fund ₹3,000 (OC/BC) / ₹1,000 (SC/ST), and Non-Govt Fund ₹2,000. Hostel fees are ₹23,000/year (non-refundable ₹5,000, caution deposit ₹5,000 refundable, rent ₹12,000 @ ₹1,000/month, application fee ₹1,000). The college encourages special focus on rural tribal health, making it a significant resource for communities in Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, and the surrounding forested districts of Telangana. Sports facilities include courts and fields for basketball, volleyball, football, table tennis, cricket, and badminton. Separate hostels with 52 rooms (men) and 54 rooms (women) are available within campus. Active institutional committees include a Gender Harassment Committee, Anti-Ragging Committee, College Council Committee, and a Grievance Redressal Cell. The UG Admission Committee is chaired by the Principal & Addl. DME, Dr. M. Sri Hari Rao, and supported by a dedicated NEET Coordinator.
