About Government Medical College, Chandrapur
Government Medical College, Chandrapur (GMC Chandrapur) was established in 2015 and is named after Marotrao Kannamwar — the 2nd Chief Minister of Maharashtra. It is the first and only government medical college in Chandrapur district — one of the most economically backward yet historically and industrially significant districts in Vidarbha, Maharashtra. The college started in the premises of District T.B. Hospital (100 beds), which was later merged with the District Civil Hospital (100 beds) to create a combined teaching facility. Affiliated to MUHS Nashik and approved by NMC, it offers MBBS (150 seats), MD/MS postgraduate programmes across multiple disciplines, and PG Diploma courses. The teaching hospital now has 681 beds with 1,200+ daily OPD patients and 24x7 emergency services, making it the largest healthcare facility in the Chandrapur region. As of 2020, 500+ students were pursuing medical studies at the institute. A new 50-acre campus is under construction on the Chandrapur Bypass Road at an estimated cost of INR 600 crores — which will also house a Cancer Hospital established in collaboration with TATA Cancer Care Foundation and the Government of Maharashtra. The MBBS fee for Open category students is INR 1.5 lakh/year — one of the most affordable in Maharashtra. During NEET 2021–2024 combined counselling, 21 candidates were allotted seats.
